From Athens to Islands: a 9-day Adventure

Athens: Where History Meets Modern Culture

Arguably one of the most beautiful destinations on earth, Greece is a highly anticipated bucket-list location for travel enthusiasts worldwide. With its crystal-blue waters, iconic architecture, and rich history, you’ll never run out of breathtaking views or unforgettable experiences.

While island hopping and beach days are often the main draw, no trip to Greece is complete without exploring Athens, the historic heart of the country. Starting your Greek adventure in Athens is the perfect way to experience world-famous landmarks before transitioning into a relaxed island escape. It truly feels like a vacation within a vacation.

Wondering what to do in Athens and where to begin? This guide breaks down the ultimate Greece itinerary, but for a personalized travel plan or detailed route map, reach out through my Contact Page. I also offer a purchasable digital Greece travel map featuring every unique stop mentioned here.

I traveled to Greece in June, and it was absolutely stunning. After a red-eye flight into Athens, we checked into the Wyndham Grand Athens, where we stayed for two nights. The hotel features a beautiful rooftop restaurant and pool, making it the perfect place to relax after a long flight before diving into nine days of adventure.

Exploring Plaka, Monastiraki & the Acropolis

Our second day in Athens was dedicated to sightseeing, starting with a guided walking tour through the Plaka District and the vibrant markets of Monastiraki. Along the way, we sampled local cheeses and enjoyed loukoumades, a delicious Greek fried dough dessert.

Next, we explored the Acropolis, visiting the:

  • Parthenon

  • Temple of Athena Nike

  • Erechtheion

Pro tip: Purchase tickets in advance and choose the earliest time slot to avoid crowds and midday heat.

We ended the evening at Mironi Greek Restaurant, located near our hotel, where we enjoyed crispy fried calamari and experienced a lively traditional celebration known as “Opa!”

Paros : Beaches, Villages & Boat Adventures

Ferry to Paros

On day three, we boarded an early-morning ferry to Paros, a Greek island known for stunning beaches and charming villages. The ferry ride offered beautiful views of nearby islands along the way.

After checking into Narges Hotel, we explored before heading to the picturesque seaside village of Naoussa.

Wine Tasting & Local Culture

One highlight was visiting a family-run winery, where we learned about traditional Greek wine production. The vines grow low to the ground to protect them from strong coastal winds—a fascinating detail unique to the region.

After the vineyard tour, we enjoyed a wine tasting paired with Greek specialties. If you find a favorite bottle, you can bring it home in a checked bag.

Boat Day Around Paros & Antiparos

Our second day in Paros was my favorite of the entire trip. After morning coffee, we rented a small boat and explored hidden coves around the island. The water was incredibly clear—perfect for snorkeling.

We also sailed around Antiparos, a nearby island worth visiting for lunch or scenic cruising.

That evening, we had dinner at the iconic Barbarossa, known for its ocean views, fresh sushi, seafood, and vibrant nightlife atmosphere.

Naxos: Culture, Cuisine & Beaches

Day Five: Ferry to Naxos

On day five, we took a ferry to Naxos, the largest island in the Cyclades, famous for its history, landscapes, and culinary traditions.

Our first stop was Platia Galini, where we joined a local family for a hands-on Greek cooking class. We prepared traditional dishes and enjoyed the meal with local wine. My favorites were the Greek meatballs and tzatziki.

Next, we visited the Eggares Olive Press Museum, one of the island’s oldest olive mills, to learn about olive oil production and sample locally made oils.

Before heading to our hotel, we explored Old Town, walking across the causeway to Palatia Islet to see the Portara, the iconic marble doorway from the unfinished Temple of Apollo.

Day Two in Naxos: Beach Day & Sunset Views

Our second day in Naxos was all about relaxation. We visited Agios Prokopios Beach, one of the best beaches on the island. Renting lounge chairs is highly recommended—you’ll enjoy table service and guaranteed seating all day.

That evening, we explored town, enjoyed fresh seafood, watched the sunset, and met locals at nearby pubs.

Returning to Athens & Wrapping Up the Trip

On day seven, we traveled back to Athens for one final dinner before packing for our flight home the next morning. It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable Greece island-hopping adventure.
